On April 1, 1990, a cyclist found a body in an advanced state of decomposition in a field near autoroute 15 sud in Verdun. The victim’s face was covered by a piece of cloth. The body was on its back and its face showed signs of violence. It was that of a man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing at most 120 pounds.

He wore grey sweatpants, a blue track jacket, and a blue and red wool sweater. Near the body was a backpack containing cards for a contest held by Birks jewelry store, the victim’s employer. No ID was found on the body.

Around April 15, 1990, after the case was covered by the media, the victim was identified as Gérald Morton, who was reported missing on October 20, 1989 in Montréal.
