Cold cases

The development of new investigative techniques led the Sûreté du Québec to create a team whose sole mission is to solve cold cases. This website is a call for the assistance of the public in providing the police with any information that could help solve cases involving serious crimes against persons.

The Sûreté du Québec’s cold cases team was created in 2004, and takes advantage of new investigative techniques, in particular DNA profiling. Seeking to make use of these new possibilities, the Sûreté du Québec has given the team the mandate to re-analyze all unsolved cases under their jurisdiction.

Over the years, the team has observed that a number of cases could be reopened as a result of information provided by the public. The general public’s willingness to cooperate and get involved has demonstrated the importance of this partnership in the creation of this new team. Experience has shown that, even after several months, or years in certain cases, the processing of new information provided by the public can assist in solving cases that families, witnesses, and even the police, believed were unsolvable.
